The average twenty-two year old spends their money on school tuition and liquor.
Tracy Molyneaux is an exception. The former St. Thomas University student is planning to spend her money on a soldering torch.
Molyneaux needs to buy the soldering torch so she can make her jewellery more efficiently and swiftly for her business venture Stars In Her Eyes Jewellery Designs.
“I started working in a bead store and I became really good at making jewellery so my friends just told me to sell it so that’s essentially how it happened,” said Molyneaux. “I started selling and it seemed really popular with people.”
The Shelburne, Nova Scotia native started up the business this summer and it still has been quite successful.
As well as making jewellery, Molyneaux works at Nicky Zee’s and brings her creations there with her.
“One girl has bought at least 15 of my pieces,” said Molyneaux. “I sell it there and they love it.”
Besides, selling her pieces at Nicky Zee’s, the young entrepreneur’s main method of marketing is through Facebook. She says the Stars In Her Eyes Jewellery Designs Facebook group is still growing.
“It’s pretty sweet,” said Molyneaux. “There are people I have never met in my life that have joined the group and are from all over the country who are commenting on my stuff.”
The business owner also markets her products through a website called deviant ART and through the common word-of-mouth.
“Also, I’ve learned giving free things away helps,” said Molyneaux. “People like your stuff and you’re like oh you’re my friend just take it. Then they tell their friends and people see it and they come back to you.”
As well as her own jewellery line, the young entrepreneur teaches beading classes at the Garden of Beadin’. She says, she teaches customers how to make rings because she is the only one who knows wirework.
“I love teaching its so much fun,” said Molyneaux. “You get to connect with a bunch of people and teach them something that you love doing. After they see what they’ve done and their proud of themselves, it’s pretty cool.”
Besides teaching, Molyneaux also makes jewellery in a professional studio as well as whenever she has some spare time.
“I chill out at my house and make jewellery, I have no life,” joked Molyneaux. “It’s either working at the bar, working at the bead store, working in the studio or sitting in my living room watching a movie and making stuff myself. “
She says, her life right now revolves around jewellery, but she hopes to get involved more in the fashion industry.
“I didn’t really plan on doing jewellery but something involving fashion is something that I’ve always wanted to do and now that I’m finally doing it, it’s mind-blowing,” said Molyneaux. “I’m only 22, I’m still really young and I’m doing something that I love doing.”
In the long run, Molyneaux hopes to expand her jewellery line and open up her own store.
“Obviously, I want it to be more successful and work with more people,” said Molyneaux. “I just really want to build up my skills and presentation, but we’ll see what happens.”
In the meantime, the twenty-two year old entrepreneur says, having her own jewellery line has made her the happiest she’s ever been.
“I’m loving what I do,” said Molyneaux. “To me that is the biggest indicator of being successful. You can make a million dollars doing something you hate and not be successful because you hate it. I don’t want to do something that I hate doing.”
The business owner says, she encourages students who want to start their own business to just do it.
“You can’t just sit there thinking oh I want to start a business but I’m going to need this and this,” said Molyneaux. “Just go get what you need and do it. Don’t think about it too hard. I did it and it was the best thing I ever could have done.”
Pictures turn out like this…
At least I remember the night:)
If you’re ever on a New Brunswick road trip don’t stop off in Jemseg.
Jemseg is a small rural community in central New Brunswick. It’d mid-way between Moncton and Fredericton. According to Wikipedia, Jemseg is known for having briefly served as the Capital of Acadia (1690-92).
So why I am writing about this?
Well, because it has to do with another awkward Jackie Allan moment that’s why.
It was the end of Easter break and my friend Ashley and I were on our way back to Fredericton. I went to her place for EASTAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA (inside joke between us) and it was pretty awesome. Her family is AMAZING!
But anywho, so we’re road tripping it back to Freddy beach in her car when I have to pee really badly. Like really badly lol. (This is what happens when you drink lots of Timmy’s on the road trip).
So Ashley says, “Hold it till we get to the next exit,”
Thankfully the exit wasn’t too far. So we got off in Jemseg.
Didn’t really think much of it till we walked into this little convenience store place.
Right away heads turn in are direction. They gave us the evil eye, which I was a little offended by. Yes, I know it’s kinda rude to go to the washroom in a place and not buy anything but come on NOT THE EVIL EYE!!!!!
The Maritimes is known for it’s friendliness…at least that’s what I thought till I arrived in Jemseg. The people in the store gave us this look like YOU DON’T BELONG HERE
So Ashley and I exchange awkward looks and begin to make our way to the washroom.
(Okay considering how this happened last year, I don’t entirely remember if this part happened BEFORE or AFTER the washroom but I’m gonna say it happened before)
Being stuck in a car for quite some time, our legs weren’t entirely stable so accidentally Ashley and I knock down a bunch of shovels.
We get some more evil looks and we look at each other with guilt. Well, I actually sniggered. Ashley just gave me a ‘shut the fuck up’ look lol it was funny.
So we make our way to the washroom…oh but waaaaitt. THERE’S ONLY ONE STALL. ONE SKETCHY STALL.
I go first and then Ashley.
So of course to get out of the store you have to walk by the people again. I give them a small smile as to say, ‘thanks for letting us use your sketchy washroom and sorry for knocking down a bunch of shovels’ but I didn’t get a returning smile back.
As soon as were out of the convince store, we burst into fits of laughter and then ask each other, “did that really just happen?”
So yeah…that’s my advice don’t stop in Jemseg.
Stay tuned for more road trip stories as I will probably be in a car with my dad for 15 and half hours back to Etobicoke. It’s gonna be a looooooooooooooooooooooooooooonnnnnnnggg drive.
Everyone has their song.
The one where whenever they hear the song they immediately say, “OHHHHHHHHH IT’S MY SONGGGGG!” And bust out some moves on the dance floor.
The song that gets me standing up on the speakers at I-Rock or dropping it like it’s hot is…
…Party in the USA by Miley Cyrus.
This is why I need professional help.
But I can’t help it the song is SOO GOOD!
My question to you guys is WHATS YOUR SONG?
Most recently, my friend Bryan told me I was graceful.
One of my bff’s Sonja laughed at that. Her words were something along the lines of this.
“Hahah you graceful! I’m sorry I love you,”
And I gotta say, I agree with Sonja on this one.
My most classic fall would have to be last class bash/Sonja/Katelin/Colleen’s birthday bash where everyone else was trashed and I was pretty sober at this point. We all got out of the taxi and who should trip and stumble out of the taxi.
The sober one.
That says a lot about me.
Another one of my great falls would be in first year when I was intoxicated as fuck and fell UP the stairs. I’m special like that;)
My neighbour across the hall…..we’ll call her djswiofrh (cause I don’t think she would want the whole world knowing about this) definitely takes the cake for the funniest fall.
There was a bunch of us in my dorm room when she went to get up. She slipped and face planted into the door. Okay so it wasn’t really a fall, but it was probably one of the funniest things I’ve have seen.
Picture it in your head, someone face planting into a door. Yeah it would be painful…but it’s also funny.
My friend Nehal who I’ve known since Grade 5 probably had the coolest falls I’ve ever seen. We came back from a movie (don’t remember which one) and we were in a rush to cross the street and somehow she tripped and did a Jackie Chan type roll out of it. Like on the road…she did this! It was WICKED! So, she rolls out of it onto the sidewalk. Then she stands up quickly and brushes herself off in an ‘I’m cool, I meant to do that’ kind of way. It was fantastic.
Now for your entertainment, here are some youtube videos of classic falls.
Everyone has those guilty pleasures. The one’s there super embarrassed about or the one’s there proud of.
Either way…here’s my top 5. (Trust me I could list more)
5) 90s TV shows
Thanks to youtube I can watch all my favorite shows from the 90s. I find when I’m stressed out or overwhelmed I kind of just want to curl on my bed and watch some old skool faves.
Most recently, I have been catching up on Sabrina the Teenage Witch. This show…was amazing. I mean who wouldn’t want to be a teenage witch? Recently my friends and I were discussing this in the caf how good the show was. Plus, Salem was HILARIOUS. A talking cat = amazingness!!
Even though he looked pretty fake, his dry wit was superb.
Also…you can give my older bro Eric credit on this one but I have been watching episodes of Justice League and X-men on online.
And wow…those shows are EPIC! Like, it’s kind of a problem. I can’t stop watching them.
Flash from Justice League makes me laugh so hard! He’s incredibly funny. This was probably my favourite quote by him.
Flash: Let’s see, after I caught the gorilla, he told me that…
Green Lantern: He talked to you?
Flash: Yeah, right after I stopped his car.
Green Lantern: I’m supposed to believe this?
Flash: Hey, we’ve both got a Martian’s phone number on our speed dial. I think I deserve the benefit of the doubt here.
Like how is that not funny? I laughed so hard! Oh my gosh….I’m still laughing like its ridiculous. But gotta love it!
And Gambit from X-men…take me on a trip to sexy town cause he’s be the mayor!!
He’s my cartoon crush ❤
That is all.
Okay…so it’s not really geeky but this guilty pleasure of mine is money consuming.
But I can’t help it, I’m addicted. It doesn’t help that near my house in Etobicoke there are two Starbucks’s within a ten minute walk.
Whenever I’m out taking a walk and listening to some tunes, my feet always lead the way to Starbucks.
It’s also a big social hangout as well. Whenever I meet up with a friend, it’s usually at Starbucks. Just saying…it’s the place to be in the e-tobes.
My fave drink would have to be the caramel frappuchino. It’s yummy.
3) Tabloid Magazines
Ugh…again also money consuming. It’s pretty bad as soon as I see a tabloid magazine with Robert Pattinson, Taylor Lautner or anyone I really like. I gasp, pick up the magazine, gaze at it and then buy it.
After I’m done reading them I usually recycle the magazines, but there are a few I like to keep. Heheheh.
I’m going to get a great deal of hate for this one… I know it.
But I would just like to point out I read the books BEFORE they got popular. I remember I finished Twilight on the drive to Fredericton in 2007. I looked over at my dad and said,
“Oh my gosh. Can we stop off at the next Chapters?”
Of course, there weren’t any Chapters for a while…and I eventually got my hands on New Moon.
But I’m a big vampire fanatic and I LOVE LOVE LOVE the romance between Bella and Edward. It makes me smile:)
And the movie has Robert Pattinson and Taylor Lautner in it…enough said.
1) Harry Potter
Of course this is my number 1 guilty pleasure.
I am a huge Harry Potter fanatic. I’m the type of fan that goes to see the movie on opening day, and when comes to push and shove I will take a bitch down…all for Harry Potter.
I pre-order the books.
I get upset when something happens that I don’t like and I will throw the book at the wall and not read it for a couple of days.
I cry when characters die.
I read books such as, If Aristotle ran Hogwarts and Harry Potter and International Relations.
I use Harry Potter pick up lines to my friends.
A few of my faves are:
I don’t have an invisibility cloak but do you think tonight I can visit your restricted section?
I want to get my basilisk into your chamber of secrets.
Want to go to the Hog’s Head, if you know what I mean?
Yeah…these actually exist.
And wait for it….wait for it…
I will line up and eagerly wait to meet a Harry Potter actor. (This will be its own post sometime soon)
These are my top five guilty pleasures.
So…what are yours?
I’m Jackie and I like to party.
And awkward moments define my life.
Seriously, that’s why I’m writing this blog. I figured people could get a kick out of the awkward moments and stories in my life.
Some of the stories to come will be
1) Embarrassing guilty pleasures
2) Drunken encounters with people you have an uncomfortable history with
3) Awkward encounters with celebrities
and many more…
As Natasha Bedingfield says, “Today is where your book begins…the rest is still unwritten.”
